The results are awesome and I couldn't be happier. The colour is vibrant and gorgeous. I used a range of different doilies, and the shades varied at the end. Some of the pre-existing marks covered and some didn't.
You have an option to just add the dye straight to your washing machine or do it on the stove top. As my washing machine was running flat out today with real laundry, I chose the stove top option.
I simmered the water as instructed but have put it into a glass bowl so you can see it. My heavy based pot is black and wouldn't have shown anything! I added dye (not all of it as I was only dying a few items) and the salt then stirred to dissolve.
The doilies were added to the mix and then I tipped it all back into the pot on the stove and simmered for half hour.
Allow to cool and then wash thoroughly. As I was doing it by hand, I needed to rinse many times. Let dry and then iron. I cheated and threw mine in the dryer as I wanted to get the images done!

I literally just did this a couple of weeks ago! Like you said the coloring can vary a bit. I also played with how long I let the doily sit in the dye.

I love this! I have some good sources for old doilies, but so many of them are discolored. Dyeing them briefly crossed my mind, but since I haven't dyed anything before it slipped right back out... Will have to try it now!

I've never crocheted plain ivory/white doilies. There are too many colours of cotton to chose from.
