Cute Summer Pj's in Saffron Craig fabric

I very rarely get the time to sew for myself but I had been itching to cut into the Saffron Craig fabric now available in the online store and last night I set aside some time to do so. Stoked with the results I thought I would share.
I decided on making a pair of cute summer pj's (even though it is pouring in Melbourne!!)
I thought the fabric, being white, would be a little sheer for the top so I lined it with a plain white cotton. This was overkill. The fabric is definitely heavy enough to be wore unlined for this sort of garment. The pj shorts proved this.
Overall the fabric was gorgeous to work with and they will be cool & comfy to wear this summer. I will give details of the pattern I used soon.
This fabric along with the other Saffron Craig designs are available now in the online store.

Just a few quick, simple tips when purchasing sewing patterns

It's no secret that I am a huge Sew Happy workshop fan. I was a pattern making student of Carole's a few years back and I'm sure I would have never left if I didn't have to drive so far!
Carole has so kindly offered to provide a few sewing tips each month for the newsletter. This month they include hem standards used in the garment industry.
But in the meantime here are just a few really quick & simple tips when purchasing a pattern:
  • All commercial patterns are a b cup bust so when buying a pattern fit to high bust measurement then adjust
  • If you in between sizes of a skirt or pants pattern, get the smaller size as it's easier to adjust up than down
  • If you a going to alter a purchased pattern and plan on closing a dart, best to close dart closest to the side seam.

Australian Textile Designers

Australian textile designers have a distinct style with many now opting for organic and natural fabrics including cotton/linen blends or hemp. Using inks that are water based and solvent free, their designs are hand screen printed.
Below are a just few of the amazingly talented designers.
Danielle Smeets of 'Of Paper and Thread' is based in Western Australian. She is a designer who uses a linen/cotton blend to make short run limited edition textiles.
Caitlin from Melbourne's Pippijoe creates the most wonderful designs on natural fibres including 100% hemp or hemp/cotton blend. Her fabric's come in different weights from the lighter weight used for bags, clothing & crafts and also in a heavier weight.

Lara Cameron is definitely one of my favourite textile designers and The Haby Goddess stocks a range of Lara's fabrics and products. With a career in web & graphic designer she is now applying her designs to hand screen printed fabrics which we just love!

Thea from Thea & Sami hand screen prints organic and hemp/organic fabrics. She locally produces a gorgeous range of homewares including linen & lampshades from her fabrics.
Umbrella Prints by Amy Prior & Carly Schwerdt are produced in their Adelaide texile house. perfectly qualified for texiled printing they have a combined knowledge in illustration, graphic design, texile design and printmaking.
