Crafts that won't come back into fashion!

I grew up in with the influence of some very crafty ladies, and no-one more so than my nana Winnie. They say that everything comes back into fashion at some time down the road.  Although the crafts shown in these images are precious as they represent happy times, I can almost bet they won't be making a come back anytime soon - if ever!
Every house she moved to the painted tyres with plastic flower arrangements were sure to follow!

One of Winnie's most grand creations was this huge pebble wall which stood in front of an old fireplace. I can only imagine the hours upon hours it must of taken her to do. Excuse the images of me dressed up in her old ball gowns - she was one tiny woman!

So here I am going through one of my boy cut stages (mum said it would thicken my hair) and one of the ultra flower arrangements she would do.  Flower arranging is not what I'm bagging here, more the use of gladioli and the South Melbourne footy colours she always used!

A few other crafts that I'm sure won't come back into fashion include macrame, anything made with taffeta, knitting coat hanger covers with bread wrappers or crocheting with dolls to cover toilet rolls!

Can you remember any crafting fads that are unlikely to make a comeback?

fingerknitting. There were two versions. One involved making a very very long string crocheted with no hook, out of wool. I'm not sure what the purpose was. And it was very easy to undo and start again.
The other version involved using a wooden thread reel with four nails hammered into it. You'd put loops of wool over each nail and feed it down into the middle of the thread reel and end up with a slightly thicker knitted ... um... worm. Again, not sure what the purpose was or what you were supposed to do with the finished product. Any ideas?

Oh, I think macrame could make a comeback - just on a slightly smaller scale! I have seen some fabulous macrame ipod covers on the web.

But I totally agree that anything made from taffeta is out and toilet roll dolls too!

Jen, I was mad on finger knitting as a kid - and you're right, it has absolutely no purpose LOL!

Ange maybe I was just hoping it wouldn't after being scared for life by the great big flower pot holder that hung from our lounge roof!

Last year the kids were crazy about finger knitting and the knitting nancy. They made great bag adornments , necklaces and xmas decorations and yes worms and snakes.
And I also think macrame will come back - there's scope there for a 21st century revamp!

Are you going to lead this revamp Trudi???

oh Knitting Nancy 'worms' are useful for a range of items, especially decoration or jewellery, so dont discount it just yet...

but that copper hammer 'Images" of horses, or Knight,.. now that better not come back any time soon.

When I was about 9 a neighbour gave me one of those dolls that sat on your bed and her large crinoline dress hid your pjs. The dress was made of really thin foam...but was very elaborate nontheless! Mum reckoned that our neighbour, a teacher, got the doll as a gift from a pupil, didn't like it and gave it to me for Christmas!! lol
What about those carry bags and boxes that were made by covering pictures, cards etc with plastic acetate and then sewing(?)them together...or maybe they put holes in the sides and then sewed up with what looked like blanket stitch???
Good that you have all those old photos of your nan's craft work! :-)

OMG the 70's were just the best! I remember those painted tyres. Why did they go out of fashion?
Did your nana Winnie make those toilet roll dollies too?

That is a truly impressive flower arrangement when you consider it's twice the size of a small child... buying that many flowers now would send you bankrupt! Ah, the 70s...

Jody i am sorry to tell you that i passed a cake/crafty stall the other day and what sat proudly on the table? Crocheted coathangars and alas a crocheted doll toilet paper holder.
what happened to good old hobbytex is that how you spell it, we had tubes and tubes of the stuff.

I remember so many of these things you have all mentioned - spirographs, I LOVED my set. Now that's a craft I would love to see come back :)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - especially the tyres, my Dad used to make the most fantastic swans (plant pots) from tyres, they were so good he even got orders for them hehe!

Personally I think our Grandmothers had it right - these days it's all about recycle, upcycle, reuse etc. etc. but my Nanna was a master at it way back then - yes, even the bread bag coathanger covers lol!

As a florist I can unfortunately vouch for the requests of large gladioli arrangements. I wince every time someone asks for one. Leave in the past people... leave it in the past.

Love the old photos, Jodie! Those tyres reminded me of the 'sculptures' made from old tyres...especially the swans....shudder! Lol.
